Purpose

The College of Nursing, as an integral part of East Carolina University, accepts the University's philosophy, goals, and objectives. The College of Nursing subscribes to the University's mission of providing an environment and atmosphere conducive to the pursuit, discovery, and dissemination of knowledge. It serves the region as well as the broader national and international communities by the development of human and material resources.

The purpose of the College of Nursing is to educate individuals aspiring to become professional nurses and those wishing to advance in the profession. The College of Nursing offers baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degree programs in nursing and collaborates in continuing education endeavors serving the region. The major function of the college is education, supported by faculty and student research and other scholarly activities and service. The faculty and staff are committed to quality undergraduate and graduate education demonstrated through outstanding teaching and to quality health care of the public through effective nursing leadership for the community-at-large. In order to meet the needs of the dynamically changing health care system, graduates with baccalaureate degrees are prepared for beginning positions as nurse generalists, able to function in a wide variety of acute care or community health settings. Graduates with master's degrees are prepared for leadership roles in advanced clinical practice, nursing education or nursing leadership. Doctoral graduates assume positions as researchers, administrators in public and private health care organizations, policy makers and analysts, and university faculty.
